Sewing Machine Hell.

I've had my sewing machine, Martha New Home, for 7 years.
My parents bought her used for me for my sixteenth birthday. I had been wanting a sewing machine since I was a little girl. They finally broke down and let me have one after my friend's mother taught me to sew.
I made my first quilts on her (that's how I learned to sew), taught myself how to make clothes on her, and I even brought her to college with me every year. She was also one of the only items I packed into my tiny Honda Civic when I moved half-way across the country to Madison.
We obviously have a long history together, and even through bunched fabric, broken needles, and bloody fingers, I've always been so thankful to have her.

Today when I sat down behind Martha with the goal of finishing a purse for my friend Marin, I was shocked to see that good ol' Martha New Home just quit pumpin' out those stitches for me.
I'm not sure if this is the end, but now I'm left wondering:
  1. WHAT THE EFF IS WRONG WITH YOU?! AHH!!
  2. Should I pay to get her repaired?
  3. Would it be more realistic/less expensive to just buy a new sewing machine?
  4. Can I afford this?? Really?!

I need advice!!
I'm feeling pretty lost here without my good companion.

(This is the only thing that could be appropriate right now.)
Oh Martha!!!

hey! i have a new home also, from the 60s, and it broke down a couple years ago. i took it in to be fixed and the guy actually did it for free--he said he was happy to work on a cool old machine rather than the plastic-y pieces of junk people have these days. so he put in a whole new motor and belt and charged me nothing, and it's been working fabulously since. so, i guess my advice is to find a mechanically-inclined person who is an appreciator of fun vintage machines!

Hey, thank you so much for the tip! I'm wondering if you just got a pretty sweet deal! My machine is certainly vintage, but I have no idea what year it was made in. Certainly not the 60's. Oy! I don't even know what to do!

Hello! I used to have a new home too. I think you cant lose anything by going to have her checked out. The repair may be a simple and inexpensive one. It would be a shame to say goodbye to such a dear old friend! Suzie. xx
